I'm reading a book about Shinto these days.
Shinto is the antient Japanese religion. ( it's not actually a religion, though.)
It's very interesting to discover the roots of the way we think or behave.
I always try to read hints in anything which look like have nothing to do with, but actually do.
In a way, it can drive me crazy by trying reading the behind of the behind.
But anyway, relatively speaking, the major tendency we, the Japanese people have, do have something to do deeply with Shinto for sure.

And I like the way how antient Japanese people payed respect to the God"s" of the nature and acknowledged the cosmos of this world.

Aya and I went to Kiyosumi-Shirakawa yesterday. It's the east side of Tokyo, where japan's most prestigious galleries are. That neighborhood has a big modern art museum, big parks and galleries while maintaining old shops and atmosphere.
That is actually the place I'm planning to move in in August!

Being naive?

I finished reading 1984 by George Orwell.
It took me long to finish reading it, but was worth reading.
It made me think what is happiness.
Being controlled (or even brain washed to believe what the society tells you to believe in) or being aware or thinking by yourself and believing in your own ideas what is good and what is bad are the everyday doubt for me since I've started working in Japan.
Most of the people who are already "shakaijin" meaning the people who already work in the society cannot doubt the rules which they are told to believe in.
You can't fit in if you doubt or follow your own rules.
However, believing in something that society tells you doesn't mean necesarily bad, because if you can live happily in that way no matter good or bad, it doesn't matter.
The most important thing in life is to be happy.
Therefore, no matter ignorant or enlightened or whatever you are, you have to follow what you can be happy.

Sadly enough, I am born to be doubtful on the things which are given by other people than myself, I guess I cannot just embed myself in the group of people who look toward the same thing.

My grandma past away last night around midnight.
She past away as if she fell asleep.
Nobody was with her that moment.
She was in the hospital, and the moment came just at a second when people went away right after her recovery from dangerous condition.
It might be that the last moment of a person's life is something not dramatic or spectacular, but it comes as it is ought to come.

It's been some time already from the last post!

I've been very busy, indeed!

I'm still working for a PR agency.

What I'm really really grateful about is that the people who work there are wonderful. I love them all! I have to admit myself being so lucky enough to work with those extremely charming people whom i can respect.

Anyway, i have a news today.

My friends, Junko Hirata and Atsuko Yanase, run a fashion label in New York, called ideeën.

They've just released their 2010 Fall/Winter collection in NY, and I helped them with my work for the textile prints.

I've heard that it's receiving positive reactions.

I'm happy to hear that!

We went to Ginza to see Ikko Tanaka's show at ggg.

And we decided to go some other shows around there.

At first, we checked out Shiseido Gallery. They have an exhibition of Asae Soya 曽谷朝絵 right now.

I found that info on Tokyo Art Beat, and the photo of her installation looked very nice, that was the main criteria we decided to go, but the actual thing was almost a disappointment.

looked like just a decoration of a kindergarten or something.

really bad.

after seeing that, we decided to go to another one.

then we again searched on TAB website, and found Odani's at Hermes Gallery.

His show in contrast was really nice.

His sculptures were so emotional and contemporary.

I could see the context of contemporary Japanese sculpture in his work, I mean by the way of the figures like pop sub-culture sort of thing, however, it was more emotional and subtle version of it.

i really liked the show.

Hi, there.

The weather in Tokyo is way too weird these days, it's been exceptionally warm after several rather chilly days. It went up to 14 centigrade degrees today!

I would like to write a bit about how I am doing these days, since I get slacked off easily that I don't post anything new on this blog.

Well, few weeks ago, me and my boyfriend, Silas-Vidar went on a trip to West-Southern part of Japan, where I am originally from- Hiroshima Prefecture. We took local trains instead of Shinkansen from Shimokitazawa station to all the way down to Onomichi station in Hiroshima.

It took us about 15 hours to get there. It was in the end, tiring in the end, but we could see lovely scenery of great mountains and land covered with silverly shining snow in Gifu.

We left Tokyo around 8 O'clock in the morning, arrived in Onomichi at 10 in the evening.

We also went to Miyajima, and Naoshima on the way home to Tokyo.

It was such a lovely holiday to us.

And now, after getting back to Tokyo, where the reality was waiting, I got an offer from my friend to work in a fashion PR company, which is what I'm doing at the moment.

They deal with New York Labels such as DEREK LAM, doo.ri, Thakoon, Jen Kao, etc.

I'm learning something new every day.

step by step, day by day,

should start thinking about next project for my own career!

It was last summer 2008 that I visited Naoshima.

Since then, Naoshima has been one of the most influential and meaningful place of mine.

It was the chance that I decided to write about Benesse Art Site Naoshima for my graduation thesis.

Thank to the inspiration, I won a prize for my final thesis.

Naoshima has got such a unique contemporary art project going on, and you won't regret seeing what's going on over there, as well as great landscape of nature on the island.

The other day, I went to Rei Naito's Exhibition.

It was in a museum in Kamakura, Kanagawa.

I was kind of looking forward to it, because of the house project of hers, Kinza in Naoshima.

But I have to say that the exhibition in Kamakura wasn't that spectacular .

I do know that she has her own atmosphere and story to her artwork, however the one in Kamakura was way to hidden what was behind of her visual artwork.

I prefer her to give the audience more clue what she means or what is behind as a concept, otherwise it's too confusing.

I still think that she's got something very much interesting to her visual works, though.

Anyway, it was a nice sunny day that day to take a walk in the neighborhood in Kamakura!

I could actually meet someone I was all the time admiring, who is the founder of Werk Magazine.
I am very very very honored that I could talk to him in person and let him know how great his publications are.
He was super nice enough to take a look at my zine and unbelievably kind enought to promise that he will send me the issue that I don't own!
It was all a great night last night.
Thank you Ryo kun and Junko chan.
I was also smashed by the work from Studio New Work.
I'm pretty much honored that I could be around these people who are doing so much effort and have very high standard.
Last night was really the chance that I could feel all those things could happen by someone around you, or at least by someone who was once dreaming to be the one who would make it happen.
Therefore, the conclusion is.. WORK!

it's been a week that i arrived in new york.

it feels so weird that it was 4 years ago that i ever lived here.

i don't feel that gap at all. it's just like yesterday i lived here.

one of the things i like and missed about new york is that so many things are going on in the city every day.

you never get bored being here.

and also, the atmosphere in the city is totally different from antwerp's.

i don't feel like i'm a stranger here.

no body really looks at you, and everybody is just doing whatever they want.

people are shouting on the street, wearing strange clothes, talking to strangers, making jokes....

so free!

at the same time, you have to be energetic to survive here.

i realized i like new york more than in the time i lived here.

well, if i have enough money, it might not be a bad idea to come back to new york to live!

i could have it done, greatly thank to my beloved and admired graphic designer, silas-vidar.
he makes his own zines and magazines. i really like the things he makes,
has such nice ideas and style.
i'm greatful that i could meet him and get to know him,
feel like we can share big part of ourselves, and have so many things in common.
never bored to be with him.

i had a meeting with someone i know today.
and this is what he told me to describe how nice for artists to work together.

he himself is an artist and organizing several artists to work on a edition box of etchings.
he's been busy with this for years already, and this time is the 18th?(i'm not sure).
he's been working together with from big names to unknown youths.
and this time, he was kind enough to ask me to participate.
it was by chance in a cafe, next to our school, called Jezuit(thank you Liesbeth!!).
i actually have very little knowledge on etching, so he introduced me to someone who does etchings for Zwarte Panther, a well known gallery here in antwerp, to prepare and teach me how to make the design i had on a etching plate.

i'm greatful that he is so supportive and always so nice even though i'm late for the meetings!
that's really a bad habit of me to be late to meetings.. really..

i always think of myself fortunate that i'm surrounded by wonderful people.
i get help and learn from people so much.

is working weird since 2days ago..
i think it's too old already.
i wanted to upgrade my FireFox, but they don't cover the latest version (even the older virsion, they dont have the link active any longer...)for osX10.3.9 anymore.
i even can't open some web pages, because my mac doenst have sufficient version of flash player..
i wanted to apply for one graphic design company, but i couldnt open their portfolio page..
how can i apply for a job without really knowing what they make??
and the worst thing is,, every time i use my Mac, i'm scared that it shuts down applications suddenly.
i want a new Mac!!

since a friend of mine, who is a New York based artist, suggested me to make my own Zine as portfolio, i've been busy with it.
i wanna have it ready for the new york trip, so i better rush for it.

it was my all time interest making a sort of computer printed book style thing.
so good opportunity and timing to go for it.

well, it's supposed to be summer now in Belgium,
but it's been chilly!
i guess it's very hot in Japan by now..
what a difference!

these couple of days, i've been packing up my stuff, cutting off the edges of the prints i made in the master project, retouching some prints,, et cetra et cetra..

but the thing is, i can't really finish packing up unless i sell the stuff i have to get rid of.
and the school is closed at the moment, but i have some things i need at school..
damn..
things are going way too slow..
it frustrates me so much..

i'm seriously looking forward to going back to japan so much.
completely different and new life is going to start there.
it would be not easy, i know, but.... it excites me alot..

i won't complain even if the life and the situation would be tough.
i just wanna try starting over something totally new,
which leads me to the unseen future!

i've been looking for a job in japan, these days..
i get up in the morning, and the first thing i do is open the laptop, check my mail box, and start making the documents for applying for job interviews.
japan has such a strict system for job applications.
this "shin-sotsu" system really scares me a lot..

anyway,
i've already booked the ticket to japan! yes, ONE WAY ticket!
i'm leaving on 29th September, arriving in Tokyo the next day, on 30th.
i'll stay in hiroshima for a couple of days, and travelling back to Tokyo.

my new life is going to start!
when i lived there, i was still a high school kid.. it's been 7 years..
i have to embed myself back again!

this miniature garden is called HAKONIWA, meaning garden in box.
looks so fun to make it!
all those little parts make me want to make my own small world!
a house by water with a lot of trees and animals....
this kind of simulation play is always fun at any age.
brings back childhood enthusiusm.

this hakoniwa is used for therapy as well.
the therapist reads the mental situation from what you put and how you put.
it also brings back old memory of childhood, which you were not conscious of.

i would like to make one, too!

the chance to got to know about Anish Kapoor was the book of Axel Vervoordt, who is a very well known Belgian antique dealer, interior cordinator, art collector,, mostly does interior cordinating for celebrites.

the last photo is the one Vervoordt owns for his private collection at canaal, the office/show room building of his, former beer factory.

i was making a sort of research to prepare for New York trip.

i found quite a few interesting information on people, institute, style, etc of printmaking and art books.

i was kind of excited to know about all those things happening in new york.

one thing that i have to keep in mind is that i always get interested very fast when i got to know about somethings which atracts me very much, but end up loosing this enthusiasm which i had at the beginning.
so i have to leave it and think it over very good.

another thing that i am these days thinking is,

the other day, i talked to a friend of mine, who is a designer of a antwerps fashion label, over mid-night eating frituur.
what we talked about was contemporary arts, fashion, motivation for creating, etc..
and when the conversation came to the point, artwork or clothing, whatever you make, would you like to buy it or possess it?

my answer was "no".

and he asked me,
when you create something, do you try to make it that you want to possess, putting yourself in the shoes of collector or art dealer, whoever buys your artwork?

and i said "no" again.

i asked him back the same question,
and he replied "yes, i do".
he says when he could make something convinsing himself to buy it for himself, that clothing or collection marks higher sales than the seasons which he couldn't feel that way.
he finds it very important that you feel buying it by yourself, otherwise who are you making it for?

to me, things i make is completely different than the things that i want to possess by myself.
the style which makes me want to buy is more pop, light subject-matter, playful,,, sort of things.
but what i make is (from my pont of view) really heavy, dark, not-so-easy subject matters.

and the final artwork which came out is completely something else than what i normally would buy for myself.

to me, those two things- things i make and things i want to possess- are completely different.

Berlinde De Bruyckere, for instance, both of my friend and I like her sculpture soo much. she makes powerful and overwhelming figures. they are so emotional and strong.
that's why we both like her sculpture so much.
but when it comes to having it by yourself, it's a different story.
would you like to have one of her sculpture?
my answer is... i don't know. it's a bit too overwhelming to have it to myself.
but my friend's answer was, he wants to have it.

as an art piece, the kind of artwork that i get inspired or being touched by is exactly berlinde de bruyckere's.

as someone who introduces artwork to people or puts artwork in the market, i should maybe start thinking the kind of artwork i want to have myself.

since i graduated from the academy at the beginning of this month, i've been slacking off!
